Reverse Lit Channel Letters
Often called “reverse halo lit,” “halo lit,” or even “backlit,” reverse lit channel letter signs are mounted away from the wall using standoffs, causing the light to form a halo effect behind the sign. The distance from the sign to the wall enables the halo of illumination around each character, helping the letters or signs to stand out. Instead of a front acrylic face, reverse channel letters have a metal face that blocks light, and only emanates light out the back.
Reverse Lit channel letters, typically feature clear or white polycarbonate backs. The choice between the two depends on the substrate they will be mounted on. Here’s how it works:
- Clear Polycarbonate Backer: When channel letters are built with a clear polycarbonate backer, the LED lights shine more brightly. However, there’s a caveat: if you mount these letters on a smooth or glossy surface (such as a backer panel or wireway), they show the reflection of the LED nodes in addition to the halo. Clear backers work well when letters are mounted to substrates or facades like brick walls or wood-paneled siding because they diffuse the halo effect.
- White Polycarbonate Backer: To address the issue of substrate reflectiveness, we provide white polycarbonate backers. These backers create a diffused lighting effect when the letters are mounted on shiny or highly polished surfaces. They soften the illumination, ensuring a more elegant and subtle halo effect.
In addition to the unique look of reverse halo lighting, customers can also add colored vinyl to the polycarb backs, which creates a distinctive and striking hue to the lighting appearance. If a halo lit sign is being mounted on a raceway, it is recommended to use a backer panel to create a singular flat surface for the light to reflect.
